How can I adjust my hearing aid volume and memories?

December 28, 2017

Your hearing aids are designed to seamlessly adjust to your everyday listening situations. This means that as you go from a busy coffee shop to a windy park to your quiet home, your hearing aids will automatically adapt to your changing environments. Soft sounds (like fingers typing on a keyboard) should be quiet but audible, while loud sounds (like a vacuum) should be loud but not uncomfortable.

We sometimes hear that users would like more control over their hearing aid volume and memories. For example, some users benefit from having a volume control that allows them to increase the volume when watching television and decrease the volume while at a loud sporting event. Other users like the ability to press a button to access different memories, such as a Restaurant memory or a Music memory.

There are several ways to adjust volume and memory, depending on the style and type of hearing aid:

  1. On-board the hearing aid

Many hearing aids feature push buttons, rocker switches, or volume wheels. These can be configured by your hearing professional to perform a number of functions, including adjusting volume and switching between memories.

  2. Using a mobile application

Made-for-smartphone hearing aids, like Starkey’s Halo 2™, are designed to be paired with a smartphone and controlled remotely by a mobile application. The TruLink® app allows users to change volume and memory, as well as create custom memories and geotag memories without ever touching their hearing aids. For more information about managing custom memories using the TruLink app, see this TruLink memories blog post.

Some very small devices, such as Starkey’s invisible-in-the-canal SoundLens Synergy®, do not feature push buttons or wheels on-board the hearing aid. Users can download the T2 Remote Control app to change volume and memory using their smartphone.

  3. With an accessory

Starkey’s SurfLink® Mobile 2 and SurfLink® Remote Control are accessories that provide options for adjusting hearing aid settings. These accessories are compatible for use with Muse™, SoundLens Synergy, and Z Series™ devices, as well as some earlier generations of hearing aids.

The SurfLink Remote Control allows for easy and discrete adjustments to the hearing aids. It can be especially helpful for those who have poor dexterity or visual impairments, as the buttons are large. The SurfLink Mobile 2 has all of the features of a remote control, plus the addition of Bluetooth streaming and remote microphone streaming.
